I have found an interesting post Google Groups about the possibility that gas giants like Neptune could have their cores completely armoured in Diamond. This was discussed in the Arthur C Clarke novel "2061" when after the planet Jupiter exploded into the White Dwarf Star "Lucifer" the Diamond core was blasted out into space and was mined by the humans.
The material was used to construct the 36,000 KM tall skytowers discussed in "3001" and the ring around the world. If mining the diamond cores was possible then we could revolutionise construction forever.
